1. Why Bali is a year-round surf paradise
Bali is not just a surf destination, it’s one of the world’s premier surf paradises, open for waves 12 months a year.
WHY?
- Tropical climate: With an average air temperature between 28° and 31°C and warm ocean waters (26-29 °C) you will never get cold, and don’t even need a wetsuit. That’s why so many people like to surf in Bali.
- Dual coastline exposure: Bali receives southwest swells during dry season (Apr-Oct) and northeast swells during the wet season (Nov-Mar), this means there is always surfables beaches year round.
- Consistent waves for all levels: You can find both small, mellow waves with sandy bottom for beginners and reef breaks with barrels for pro surfers. There is something for anyone.
- Vibrant surf culture: everywhere you go there is such a vibe, small shops, cafes, people skating, people having a coconut on the beach while watching sunset and many surf schools, surf camps and local instructors. Bali has a strong local and international community.
- Great infrastructure: Bali is well known for having beautiful and great accommodation, for any budget, from easy guesthouses and hostels to more comfortable hotels and luxury villas. You can easily rent quality surf equipment anywhere and access to multiple surf spots.
2. Bali surf season explained
Bali has two main surfing seasons, each offering unique conditions and coastlines:
Dry Season (April to October) : Peak surf season
Southwest swells hit the western coast: Uluwatu, Canggu and Kedungu are great spots on this period.
Offshore winds from the east create clean, glassy waves. This is the best surf camp Bali season for consistent surf and long wave rides. Everything is perfect, but expect larger crowds due to peak travel season, both in the water than outside.
Wet season (November to March) : Hidden gems on the east coast
Northwest winds make the east coast surfable, some good spots are Nuda Dua, Serangan and Keramas. Swells are slightly smaller, but the crowds are much less. It may rain sometimes but there is always some break between rain to surf.
