Beyond Surfing: Things we end up doing around the camp (again and again)

February 9, 2026

A surf camp Bali experience extends far beyond the ocean, offering a perfect balance between morning surf lessons Canggu and spontaneous adventures to iconic spots like Tanah Lot or Mount Batur. At Kavo Maison, recognized as a best surf camp Bali for its flexibility, a surf and yoga retreat Bali gives guests the freedom to explore the island’s culture at their own pace without a rigid schedule. This organic approach to discovery is what makes a surf retreat Bali truly memorable. Read our full guide to the best activities beyond the waves below.

I used to think a surf camp would mean surfing, eating, sleeping… repeat.
And yes, that’s part of it. But what actually happens is very different.

Surf sessions are usually in the morning. Early, salty, a bit sleepy. Then you come back, eat, shower, sit around for a while… and suddenly it’s early afternoon and no one really wants to rush anywhere.

That’s when people start asking questions like:
“Should we go somewhere?”
“Is there anything nice around?”
“Do you feel like moving, or just chilling?”

And little by little, these places became our favourites.

Tanah Lot (the place everyone thinks is overrated… until they go)

I won’t lie, Tanah Lot can be busy.
But if you go late in the afternoon, not too rushed, it’s still one of those places that makes you stop talking for a second.

The temple sits on a rock in the ocean, and depending on the tide it almost looks fake. People usually say nothing for a while, then take photos, then just watch the water.

It’s not something you do every week. But once? Yes.

Sunday at Brisa (when nobody wants a plan)

Brisa on Sunday is where people end up when they don’t really know what they feel like doing.
It’s slow. You walk, you stop, you eat something, you sit. No pressure to buy anything.

Some people love it, some just pass through. But it’s perfect for that free day when you don’t want alarms or schedules.

Beaches you don’t “do”, you just go to

Near the camp, beaches aren’t really destinations. They’re more like places you drift to.

Kedungu feels open and raw.
Pererenan feels calm and local.
Batu Bolong feels alive, sometimes chaotic, sometimes fun.

No one ever says “let’s go to this beach because it’s the best”.
You just go where it feels right that day.

Pantai Warung (for doing nothing properly)

Pantai Warung is where people go when they’re tired in a good way.
After surf. After sun. After talking all day.

You sit. You order something cold. You watch the sky change colour.
No one asks questions. No one rushes.

It’s simple. And that’s exactly why it works.

Mount Batur (the early morning you complain about, then thank yourself for)

Nobody ever wakes up excited for Mount Batur.
It’s dark. It’s early. You wonder why you said yes.

Then the sun comes up, the light hits the lake, and everyone goes quiet.

It’s not relaxing. It’s not easy.
But it stays with you.

Ubud for a day (when you need a different Bali)

Ubud feels like another island.
Greener, busier, more intense.

Some people love it, some are happy to leave after a day.
But as a day trip, it works really well.

You walk, you see temples, rice fields, monkeys, waterfalls… and by the evening you’re ready to come back to the coast.

Uluwatu (when you want space and cliffs)

Uluwatu feels wide. Windy. Dramatic.

High cliffs, ocean everywhere, temples hanging over nothing.
It’s not about doing many things. It’s about standing there and looking.

Do people actually have time for all this?

Yes. Because nothing is forced.

Surf in the morning.
Free afternoons.
One full free day every week (usually Sunday).

Some people explore a lot. Some barely move.
Both are fine.

We organise things once people are here — rides, ideas, timing — but no one is locked into plans.

What we’ve learned over time

Surf gives structure.
Free time gives space.
Everything else happens naturally.

The best moments usually aren’t planned.
They start with: “Do you feel like going somewhere?”

That’s when Bali feels real. And that’s why many guests tell us this is the best surf camp bali experience they’ve had—not because of a strict itinerary, but because of the freedom to discover the island at their own pace.
