Why Bali is the perfect destination for Digital Nomads (and how surf & yoga camps make It better)

September 19, 2025

Bali has become one of the most famous destinations for digital nomads. People from all around the world come to this island as it has great opportunities for remote workers: from coworking spaces, cozy cafes, convenient prices, social activities, sport facilities and beautiful nature. In Bali there is a big digital nomad community, especially in Canggu. Nomeo.io is a great platform to connect with other remote workers and build your community in Bali.

It’s not only about coworking places and laptop cafes but it’s also about building a healthy lifestyle and Canggu has become the perfect place to do that. Many people come to Bali experiencing a surf and yoga retreat Bali to first get the sense of the community and step into the vibrant life of the island and often finish staying longer and maybe even build a life in Bali. Trust me, I was one of them 😂

Why Bali is a Digital Nomad Hotspot

  • Visa opportunities: There are different types of visas you can apply as a digital nomad. The most common are:
    • C-Type Visit Visa 211: If you stay less than 180 days, the C-Type Visit Visa is a good option. The Visa still is also known as the 211A Visit Visa will allow you to stay 60days, while it can be extended twice for 60days each without that you need to leave Indonesia, giving you a stay of 180days.
    • Remote Worker Visa: This is a good option if you wish to stay in Indonesia while you are actually working for an employer abroad. The E33G Remote Worker Visa is valid for 1 year; it’s a KITAS, which is a Temporary Stay Permit.
  • Cost of living: The cost of living in Bali is much more affordable compared to other countries in Europe, Australia or USA. A meal can cost as little as 0.50 eur in a local warung.
  • Internet connection: In comparison to other destinations in Southeast Asia, Bali has a great, stable and fast internet connection, especially in the most known area as Canggu, Ubud or Uluwatu.
  • International network and facilities: There is a huge international network and plenty of facilities that go from coworking spaces to equipped gym and international supermarkets.

Where to stay

Even though Canggu is a great area for digital nomads it can also be very crowded, that’s why more people are moving outside of the center, in locations like Munggu, Seseh or Kedungu. These areas are close enough to the vibrant Canggu but far enough to enjoy the quiet. They are a great option also  if you want to learn surfing. You can find some of the best surf camps and surf schools in Bali here.

Kavo Maison Surf & Yoga Camp is a great option if you are looking for something more quiet, outside of the crazy Canggu but close enough to get the vibes. The surf camp Bali offers coworking space in the restaurant with an amazing view on the ricefields. As a digital nomad you will be able to have enough time to enjoy the activities such as surfing and yoga, while working.

Why a surfcamp and not a normal accommodation?

Surfing has become a very popular sport among digital nomads and has been proven to be a powerful tool to relieve stress and restore mental balance. A recent national survey published in Nature found that over 75% of surfers reported a positive impact on their mental health and their ability to cope with stress through surfing. The same study also showed that surfers scored higher on overall well-being compared to the general population (PWI = 77.6 vs. 75.2). When combined with yoga and the calming environment of Bali’s rice fields and ocean, surfing becomes not only a sport, but a pathway to mindfulness, resilience, and inner peace. After surfing you will have enough time to get your work done, enjoy the refreshing pool or the bar. You will meet people from all around the world and start building your Bali community.

Practical tips for Digital Nomads in Bali

  • Best areas for coworking: Canggu, Munggu, Ubud. Choose Canggu if you like to be surrounded by restaurants, cafes, shops and nightlife, but be aware that it may be a bit chaotic. Consider Munggu as an alternative to Canggu, it’s just a 10 to 15 minute ride from Canggu so you will still be able to enjoy the “city life” but staying in a quieter area in contact with nature. Ubud is your place if you look for a more spiritual place. It’s 40-50 minutes from the coast but has plenty of culture and nature to offer.
  • If you are curious about surfing choose periods like November, December less crowds and easier waves. You will be able to get both sunshine while surfing and get some coziness working in the coworking spaces while rainy days may approach.
  • Don’t forget to get travel and medical insurance, SafetyWings offers great options for remote workers and digital nomads.
