If you’re planning a trip to Bali, you may have already heard about Canggu, a little town where surfing has become a way of life, where smoothie bowls are a must and little boutique an local markets full the streets surrounded by rice fields.  Canggu is one of the best places in the world for beginner and intermediate surfers, and joining a surf lesson here is often the highlight of any Bali trip.

Whether you’ve never touched a surfboard before or you’ve tried a few times and want to improve your technique, taking surf lessons Canggu is the best way to start. At our surf and yoga retreat in Bali, we see it every day,  the mix of excitement, nerves, and pure joy that comes with catching your first wave.

So, what exactly happens on your first day of surf lessons in Bali? Here’s everything you can expect.

1. Start the day with the right energy

A typical morning at a surf camp Bali starts early, but calm. You’ll probably wake up to the sound of birds. Start your day with a yoga session on our open terrace to help wake up your body and calm your mind. Yoga and surfing are a perfect combination, both require balance, focus, and strength.

Before going to the beach, enjoy a healthy breakfast: smoothie bowls, tropical fruit, pancakes or try some local food such as the famous “Nasi Goreng”.

2. Getting to know your instructor

When you arrive at the beach, your instructor will greet you with a big Balinese smile, and probably a few jokes to calm your nerves. In Canggu, surf instructors are used to working with beginners, so they know exactly how to make you feel comfortable.

Firstly, your instructor will explain some basics:

  • How to position yourself on the board
  • How to paddle correctly
  • How to pop up (stand up on the board)
  • Safety rules and how to handle waves

The goal of your first session isn’t to become an expert, it’s to get a feel for the board, learn how to read the ocean, and have fun.

3. Warm-up and beach practice

Don’t worry, you won’t be pushed straight into big waves. The first minutes are all about stretching and warming up. This helps prevent injuries and prepares your muscles for paddling (believe me the paddling is harder than you may think).

Then, it’s time for practicing on the sand, you’ll lie on your board on the sand and practice the paddling and pop-up technique. It might look funny (and you’ll probably fall a few times), but it’s an important step before heading into the water.

Many surf schools in Canggu (us included) use video analysis after the session, this allow you to see yourself from outside and the instructors will help you work on the technique and posture, one of the reasons Bali is considered the best place for surf lessons in Asia.

4. Time to go in to the water

Once your instructor decides you are ready, you’ll go into the ocean, usually at a calm beach like Batu Bolong, Berawa, or Kuta. These beaches have soft waves and sandy bottoms, perfect for beginners.

Your instructor will help you find the right spot and will even give you a push to catch your first wave. You’ll quickly realize that surfing isn’t just about standing up, it’s about timing, patience, and reading the ocean.

You’ll wipe out a few times, of course. Everyone does. But that’s part of the fun! Each wave teaches you something new about balance, movement, and letting go of control, a lesson that believe me, will be useful not only on your surfboard, but in your daily life.

5. Post-surf reflections (and snack time!)

After about 90 minutes in the water, you’ll be both exhausted and completely energised, the adrenalise is gonna rise as crazy. Most surf camps head back to base for a shower and relaxation time.

At Kavo Maison Surf & Yoga Camp, we always say that the post-surf feeling is magic, you feel tired, but at the same time calm in your mind and extremely happy, all the worries disappeared.. That’s the moment you realize surfing isn’t just a sport, it’s therapy.

Later, during video analysis or surf theory class, you’ll look back at your session and get some explanation and feedback about your position, paddling and pop-up. You will also laugh, everyone feels so cool on the board, but seeing it from outside may look a bit different 😀

6. Surfing is for everyone

One of the biggest misconceptions we hear from new guests is, “I’m too old to surf,” or “I’m not strong enough.” This is absolutely not true!

The best surf camps Bali welcome people of all ages, fitness levels, and backgrounds. Surfing is less about strength and more about mindset. You don’t need to be a pro athlete, just willing to try, laugh, and fall a few times, and if you practice with an experienced instructor and school it’s not gonna be dangerous.

For many, surfing becomes a way to reconnect with themselves, to feel the power of the ocean, and escape from daily life and stress.

7. After surfing: yoga, wellness & community

At many surf retreats in Bali, including ours, the experience is not only about surfing. After your lesson, you can join a relaxing yoga class. In the morning we usually offer more energising lessons and in the afternoon we offer Yin Yoga or stretching sessions, this wil help your body to relax and recover after the surfing.

There are also community dinners, Balinese ceremonies, funny games, sunset moments and cultural activities that help you connect with local traditions and people from all over the world.
This balance between surfing, yoga, community and self-discovery is what makes Bali such a special place.

At Kavo Maison Surf & Yoga Camp, we believe surfing teaches you about life and yoga teaches you about yourself. Together, they create the perfect mix.
