What surfing taught me about life: From Europe to Bali and building the Best Surf & Yoga Camp

October 3, 2025

If you feel stuck in your life, if you feel there is something else outside there, this may be for you.

My Journey from Europe to Bali

A couple of years ago I was just a normal 32 years old woman, living an ordinary life in Europe. I had a good job in an office, sharing a nice apartment with my partners and taking care of my 3 cats. I was living the week waiting for the aperò time, the weekend, the event, the dinner, the SOMETHING. I bet many of you reading this understand what I mean right? Is not that I was unhappy, but I felt I was just settling for life without living it to the fullest.

In 2023 I made the most difficult, scary and beautiful choice of my life: I left my entire life, my job, my home, my everything and I started traveling without an end date. Leaving behind my fast-paced life in Europe wasn’t easy. But deep inside, I knew I needed a change.

After 1 year of travelling I ended up in Bali and here is where the magic actually happened. It may sound like a cliché, but Bali truly changed me. It showed me my real self, and I couldn’t be more grateful. And believe me, when you see videos of Bali crowded with tourists or too much traffic, those people haven’t experienced the real Bali.

From the first moment in Bali I felt a strong connection with the ocean so I decided to take some surf lessons Canggu. I never surfed before, I never practiced any water sports but watching those surfers dancing in the waves attracted me so much I felt I wanted to try it! It didn’t only look like a sport, it seemed a lifestyle and I was very curious about it.

Surf as a Teacher of Life Lessons

The moment I entered the water with my board I felt immediately a beautiful calm energy surrounding me, of course I was a bit scared, but at the same time I felt so at peace. At my first surf lesson, I fell more times than I can remember. But that’s the beauty of surf school: every fall teaches you resilience, just like in life. The best surf camps are not about perfection, but about learning to enjoy the process.

Wave after wave, fall after fall, I understood that yes surfing is not just a sport, it teaches you so much, about yourself, about life!

Surf in Bali

Some of the lessons I got from surfing:

  • Wiping out = failure is part of growth
Falling again and again is frustrating at first, but it’s also how you learn. Every wipeout makes you a little stronger and a little better, just like in life.
  • Waiting for the wave = patience and timing
You can’t rush the ocean. Sometimes you sit for minutes, watching the horizon, until the right wave finally shows up. It’s a reminder that patience pays off, and that timing often matters more than speed.
  • Facing big waves = confronting your fears
When a big set comes at you, every instinct says “turn and escape.” But the truth is, the only way not to get crushed is to paddle toward it and dive under. It’s scary, but it shows you that the best way to deal with fear is not to run away, but to meet it head-on.
  • Riding the wave = enjoying the present
The best feeling is when you finally catch the wave and everything else disappears. For a few seconds, you’re just there,in flow, in the moment. Surfing reminds me not to forget that feeling in everyday life too.
  • Knowing your limits = wisdom, not weakness
Some days the ocean is simply too powerful, and the safest choice is to stay on the sand. Learning to accept your limits doesn’t mean giving up, it means respecting yourself and the ocean.

From surf school student to Surf Camp founder

After falling in love with surfing, Bali, the ocean and everything around it, I understand why my life led me here. I wanted to bring this sensation, this way of life to other people! When I first joined a surf lesson Canggu, I didn’t imagine I would one day open my own retreat. But every sunrise paddle and every yoga session brought me closer to my dream of creating the best surf & yoga camp in Bali. That’s how Kavo Maison Surf and Yoga Camp was born. From a dream to reality.

Surf Camp Bali

Our surf camp Bali isn’t just about catching waves. It’s about finding balance, between surf and yoga, between fun and introspection, between connecting with new friends and connecting with yourself.

If you find yourself in a moment of life where you feel you want to discover about the world, about yourself a trip to Bali could bring you more than you can imagine, you don’t necessary need to leave everything like I did, but I truly encourage you to take a little break from your daily frenetic life, but I’m not talking about the usual vacation, I’m talking about real experiences, connections and new cultures. This is what we want to offer at Kavo Maison Surf and Yoga Camp.

I know what you are thinking “I’m not able to surf” neither was I! but trying new things in life is what keeps us alive! and believe me, surfing is not just a sport, it is a way of life. As balinese people like to say: Never try, Never know!
